Krish narrated the full story to Rana on Vijayadashami. They completed shooting the movie on Vijayadashami the next year.
Krish had a subject with the same title ready for Venkatesh. After that project got shelved, he used the title for this film.
After Vedam, Krish penned two stories for two hero's in particular. Shivam- For Mahesh Babu and KVJ for Rana. As Mahesh was busy with other commitments, Krish went ahead and made KVJ.
Nayanthara had turned down the offer to act in this film initially. She said that she had decided to quit acting after Sri Ramarajyam. However, she had a change of heart and decided to return to the industry with this film.
The film was shot in just 79 days.
It was released simultaneously in Tamil and later dubbed into Malayalam and Hindi as well. The movie was titled Ongaramin in Tamil, Action Khiladi in Malayalam and Krishna ka Badla in Hindi.
Censor board opined that the violence in the film was overboard. Hence, they toned down the violent scenes.
They used the dry land behind Ramoji Film City to capture the rustiness of the mining area. They had a huge exhibition set in Nanakramguda which was set to fire for the climax. They had burnt around 125 cylinders each night for 26 nights while shooting the climax.
