We exist in a society where the word ‘Transgender’ and discussions about the people belonging to this community has become a taboo. Because of the lack of any conversations about transgender community there are a lot of misconceptions and wrong beliefs. Most of us choose to ignore the fact that this community is a part of our society and also that they can be productive and contribute to the society. And if ever there was a part of the society, which has been horribly misunderstood over the ages then, it is this section of people. To change this situation, Rachana Mudraboyina, a noted transgender activist from Hyderabad, has envisioned and started ‘TransVision’, a YouTube channel.
TransVision is producing web series about issues concerning Transgender community. Through this channel, these activists from Hyderabad want to talk about who are transgender people, things to not ask Trans people, issues they face, mythological stories with Trans characters, national and international Trans activists. They say that all of these efforts will cause ripples in the society and will urge the people to think of the Trans community as a part of our society and consider them normal people like each one of us.
TranVision will produce its web series in three languages- Telugu, Kannada and Urdu. The team is headed by Rachana Mudraboyina who says that “Most of us only understand or are aware of only two genders in this world, “man” and “woman”. But, gender is much broader than that, it is a way of feeling, expressing and being. So, why shouldn’t transgender individuals enjoy the same rights and privileges that the rest of us do?” The team also consists of inspiring stories like that of Sonia Sheikh, a dancer and acid attack survivor from Hyderabad. She wants to rise above the injustice done to her and contribute to the her community.
Her web series is called ‘Alif … Sonia’ which provides right and healthy information. Anjali, another transwoman, will head a web series name ‘A, Aa, E, Ee…Anjali’ - which answers a very basic question ‘Who are transgenders?’ All these Transwoman and their team are very inspiring. They are fighting to establish their own identity and gain respect that they rightly deserve. So it is time even for us to treat them as equals and stop discriminating them.
