Of late, if there's one director who has developed cult following with his very first movie - then it's undoubtedly - Sandeep Reddy Vanga. The Arjun Reddy/Kabir Singh director's journey from 'physiotherapy to direction' is in itself a great example to explain the importance of taking risks, accepting challenges, and perseverance.
From choosing to portray a brilliant medico student with anger management issues, to the rawness that his script contained - all in a directorial debut, Sandeep's idea of filming a movie like Arjun Reddy in this era of controversies and criticism, is really an exceptional feat. In his talk, he surely has ticked all the boxes of Breaking the Mould. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
Entering Hyderabad:
Sandeep says that it was never that easy to approach a producer. "Forget stars and producer, it is tough for a film school graduate to even go to a film set and work as an Assistant Director.."
Shelved project:
The director went on to say that it took one year for him to know how exactly the Telugu cinema works. Later, he met a producer to whom he narrated a script (film named Sugar Factory) and started working on it - which went on for an year. However, a year later, the produced backed out and the project never got released.
Hollywood films:
He said, taking inspiration from a lot of Hollywood and European films, many a times he would come across a thought of directing a particular scene in a better way or on the same lines, but nothing could be done about it because no body believed in him back then.
Belief :
"You go tell a story to someone. If he has money and if he believes you.. you are the director and he is the producer..."
