Everything About The Origins Of The 800 Year Old Hanuman Temple In Hyderabad!

The history of Hyderabad city easily goes back 425 years. However, there is a temple in Hyderabad which has a history of 873 years - The Karmanghat Hanuman Temple.

This temple was built by Prataprudra II, of the Kakatiya dynasty. The story behind the construction of this temple is that, King Pratarudra II was on a hunting expedition; after a long hunt, he was tired and stopped to rest at a village called Lakshmigudem. When he sat under a tree, he repeatedly heard the roar of a tiger, but he couldn’t find the tiger anywhere around. He proceeded in the direction of the roar, and after following it for some time, he heard the chanting – “Sri Ram” – and discovered the idol of Lord Hanuman. That night, in his dream Lord Hanuman asked him to build a temple at that place. On the very next day, the king laid the foundation for the temple (approximately in 1143 A.D.)

IN 1687, During the expansion of Mughal Empire, Aurangzeb sent out his armies to all corners of the country. Aurangzeb had a personal vendetta against all Hindu places of worship. His armies went around destroying one temple after the other. However at this temple, the army couldn't even step close to the compound wall. When the general reported this to Aurangzeb, he himself went with a crow bar to break down the temple. At the threshold of the temple, he heard a deafening roar rumbling like thunder, and the crowbar slipped from his hands as he was shaking in fear. Then he heard a voice in the heavens "Mandir todna hai rajan, to kar man ghat" (translation: "if u want to break down the temple king, then make your heart stronger) which is why the place got the name Kar-Man-Ghat.
