Psychology is a rare degree and people have various misconceptions on that. The first reaction a person gives when we introduce ourselves as psychology students get alert and save themselves from being read by you. Listening to those things will sure gonna make you lie to people about your majors in graduation. Here are some pretty common dialogues we hear as psychology students.
1. We can read your minds This is one hell of irritating things people say. The next minute you say you're studying psychology, they shoot us with 'Can you read my mind?' question. Excuse me! did I stutter or did you just not hear what I said? I said 'Psychology', not Astrology.
2. We are very confident about ourselves It's not as if whoever is doing psychology has their life set. We also have the same insecurities and relationship problems. It's not as if we can self-counsel ourselves and get better all the times.
3. We can counsel you anytime We are not permitted to counsel anyone until the time we get a permission. This is something people will never get. They would want us to counsel them and make them feel better. Dude! relax there are trained people out there to do that. And one more important thing for you to notice here, we're yet to graduate.
4. We know mind tricks We don't know how to hypnotize you, read your mind or whatsoever. Yes, they're a part of our course but it's just the basics we know. And we can be sent to jail if someone finds out it happened. Without knowing that it's just outright irritating that people just bugging you about it.
5. We have answers to all your problems We do understand certain reactions and emotions better but we don't know what's running in your thoughts. At the same time, we surely don't have answers to your random life confusions. Arey, we are just merely students studying psychology and not someone mastered the art. It's like asking biology students to treat for a heart attack.
6. It’s just common sense Yes, we agree psychology is based on our common sense. But no it's not just that. There's more to psychology than just understanding people's body language or analyzing your handwriting. It's the same as saying engineering is all about computers.
7. We can detect any kind of disorder Treat my depression. I think I have OCD. Can you help me get over that? This is where we lose it. We know about these disorders but we can't treat them now. Can't you see I'm still going to college?
8. We only took it up because it’s easy We agree it is easier than Quantum Physics and organic chemistry, but it surely does have its complexities. It's not easy understanding the shit going on human's heads. And we did not take it up because we failed maths in school. People who usually take up psychology have a passion for it and definitely not because they wanted to graduate in something easy.
9. They try reading us They try exhibiting the little to no knowledge they have in psychology. They start trying the body language tricks they picked up from random footpath books and feel like the modern version of Sigmund Freud. We just can't do anything but laugh about it on the outside and kill that person in our head.
10. Is it the same as psychiatry? People! Get your facts right! Psychology is different from psychiatry. We are not allowed to prescribe medicines. Without knowing that some people think its just psychiatry but an easy version of it.
