A district which consists of everything with a prominent history, it has special place in all Telugu districts. Krishna district produced several great personalities who spread our Telugu pride throughout the world.
1. Krishna District gets its name from the holy river Krishna, the third largest river that flows in India. The river Krishna originates near Mahabaleshwar (Maharashtra) and joins the Bay of Bengal near Hamsaladeevi Village. It was formerly called Machilipatnam District.
2. Krishna is considered the kernel of Telugu Culture and is the birthplace of the famous Indian classical dance form - Kuchipudi. The dialect of Telugu spoken in Krishna is widely considered to be the standard form of Telugu.
3. The history of this region dates back to 2nd century BC. The area was ruled by the Satavahanas (230 BC – 227 AD); Pallavas (340 AD – 500 AD), Chalukyas (615 AD – 1070 AD) and later by Cholas, Kakatiyas and Reddy dynasty.
4. Kanaka Durga Temple is located on Indrakeeladri hill overlooking Vijayawada as well as the River Krishna. It was built after 12th century by Maharaja Poosapati Madhava Varma, the ancestor of Vijayanagaram Poosapati Kings. He is the builder of Modern Vijayawada kingdom.
5. The Railway station at Vijayawada is the 2nd Busiest Junction in India. More than 200 trains pass by/originate/terminate at this railway station.
6. Four national highways pass through the district: NH-5 - Chennai to Kolkata, NH-9 - Pune to Machilipatnam, NH- 221 - Vijayawada to Jagdalpur, NH-214 - Kathipudi to Ongole.
7. Besant Road, which is the busiest trade centre in Vijayawada, is frequently visited by tourists. The road is flanked by modern eateries, including restaurants serving western style cuisines as well as Indian delicacies. This street is a hub of entertainment, as it is flanked by number of cinema halls that play most modern films from all languages.
8. The designer of Indian flag Pingali Venkayya is also from Krishna district. Pingali Venkayya was an authority in geology, agriculture and also an educationist who set up an educational institution in Machilipatnam.
9. Mogalrajapuram Caves are said to be excavated in 5th century A.D. The caves are reputed to be the first of their kind in South India. The idols of Lord Nataraja, Vinayaka & Arthanareeswara are carved here, but none of the statues are available here now.
10. Maruthi is the first permanent theater in Vijayawada as well as Andhra Pradesh constructed in 1921. It was built by Pothina Srinivasa Rao. It was a prominent theater in Vijayawada up to mid 60s.
11. Koneru Humpy from Krishna became the youngest woman ever to achieve the title of grandmaster (not solely a Woman Grandmaster) at the age of 15 years, 1 month, 27 days. Chetan Anand Buradagunta, a four-time National Badminton champion in 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010, and recipient of the prestigious Indian Arjuna Award also hails from Krishna District.
12. Krishna District produced several legendary film stars who took our Telugu cinema to another level. SV Ranga Rao, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Savitri, Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao, Jandhayala Subhramanya Sastry, Veturi Sundara Ramurthy, Soban Babu - all hailed from Krishna district.
13. Vijayawada has the second biggest and busiest bus terminal in the Asia. It was inaugurated on 23 September 1990. APSRTC is running more than 450 city buses in city to various destinations.
14. The Jawaharlal Nehru Auto Nagar Industrial Estate in Vijayawada is one of the largest hubs of automobile industry of Asia(There are about 1500 automobile accessory units in the city and near about 100,000 workers are employed in these industries).
15. Kondapalli toys are very famous all over the country and these are made in Kondapalli in Vijayawada. This 400-year-old tradition has passed on from generation to generation with every member taking part in the toy-making activity in ‘Toy Colony’ of Kondapalli.
