The city of Eluru has great prominence in the history of Andhra Pradesh and it starts in the 2nd century. From 2nd century to 12th century Eluru was capital of Andhra when it was ruled by Salankayanas, Vishnukudinas, and Eastern Chalukyas.
The history of Eluru dates back to the 2nd century and has great prominence in the history of Andhra. Vengi, near Eluru was the capital of Andhra from 2nd century to 12th century, ruled by Salankayanas, Vishnukudinas, and Eastern Chalukyas. Vengi was the capital city of Andhradesa for many years than any other city in Andhra Pradesh.
Salankayana ruled from the 3rd century AD to 5th century AD. They were the feudatories of Ikshvakus. Later it was ruled by Vishnukundinas and emerged as the major city. Later it was ruled by the Eastern Chalukyas for around 500 years from the 7th century until 1130 C.E.
Eluru was later captured by Kakatiyas and after some years, then it became a part of the Kalinga Empire until 1471. Later it fell into the hands of the Gajapatis. In 1515, "Andhra Bhoja" Srikrishnadevaraya captured it. After the fall of the Vijayanagara Kingdom, it was taken by the Sultan of Golkonda, Kutub Shah.
Eluru was the capital of the Northern Circars, a former division of British India's Madras Presidency and served as military station. Salabat Jang, the son of the Nizam al Mulk allowed Northern Circars into French East India Company and was essentially exchanged from the French to the British. After the British established control over South India, Eluru and surrounding areas were merged into the Madras Presidency.
After the division of Northern Circars, it became a part of the Machilipatnam district In 1859, it was included in the Godavari district and later it was made a part of the Krishna district. In 1925, it became the headquarters of the newly formed West Godavari district.
The city produced prominent personalities like LV Prasad, Duvvuri Subbarao, Murali Mohan and home for famous CR Reddy educational institutions.
