Meet the citizens of Velamavaripalem, a small village in the Ballikurava Mandal of Prakasam, where they are doing everything they can to prevent the extinction of migrant birds. Here’s what you need to know about their efforts:

Painted Storks This species of birds forms the largest percentage of the migrant bird population in the village.

Borewells The village raised Rs. 4 lakh to build borewells, so that the migrant birds do not die of dehydration.

1977 That was the year that saw the devastating Diviseema Super Cyclone. That event uprooted many trees in and around the village. Since trees were the breeding grounds, the migrant bird population faced a huge decline.

Fast-Growing Trees The village planned to raise fast-growing tree saplings in two acres behind the village school this year to improve the birds’ natural habitat.
