Remembering Padma Shri Ramakant Achrekar, The Legendary Cricket Coach

I still remember a small conversation which happened in middle of a serious discussion with my manager. Here it goes,
Manager: Do you know who is Sachin Tendulkar’s coach?
Me: Yes, it’s Ramakant Achrekar!
Manager: Do you think he will play better cricket than Sachin?
Me: Maybe no!
Manager: But do you think did he played a vital role in Sachin’s cricketing career?
Me: Of course, it’s clearly noticeable from the way which Sachin treats him.
Manager: Likewise; Technically, I may not be as good as you. The way you are working now, we have done the same in our initial stage of career. Now, our focus is on people skills. We are here to manage and get things done right. So, stop complaining and give your best!
We never know who will become our role model one day! A teacher, scientist. director, manager or whom so ever it may be; Their character, humbleness and nature of always giving the best will be our inspiration!
One such great personality is Ramakant Achrekar, Sachin Tendulkar’s life guru!

Ramakant Achrekar – The only name which will be rotating in our head when we hear the word Cricket coach! That is his reputation in India. He is into coaching even in his last few days. The lights of his greatness will always shine bright!

He is born in 1932 in Mumbai and has passed away yesterday (January 2nd, 2019). All through his life, he has been an active cricket coach and trained 1000’s of young talents in Mumbai. His life and his inspiring career have been documented in the book “Ramakant Achrekar: Master Blaster’s Master” by the journalist Kunal Purandare.

Most of us know that Sachin Tendulkar is the student of Ramakant Achrekar sir, but he is also the coach for Vinod kambli, Agit Agarkar, Balwinder singh sandhu, Ramesh powar, Sanjay Bangar, Pravin Amre and many other noticeable names.

The discipline and modesty he has inculcated into youngsters made him stand tall among the cricket coaching staff of India, especially Mumbai. He has founded Kamath Memorial Cricket Club in Shivaji Park and trained numerous talents.
He has been awarded with DRONACHARYA award in 1990, given for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games and in 2010, his work has been appreciated with PADMA SHRI award. Thank you for nurturing the finest talents Sir. You will always be remembered!

And as a mark of respect to the demise of Mr.Ramakant Achrekar, Indian team is wearing black arm bands in today’s Sydney match.
