UN Declares Hyderabad Metro Cycling Project amongst the 20 best Social Projects in the world!

The United Nations Habitat III conference held in Quito, Ecuador has recognized Hyderabad Cycling Project amongst the 20 best social projects in the world. In a conference held to finalize new urban agenda for the next 20 years – 2016 to 2036, the committee has decided to list out 20 best social projects in world and Hyderabad was ranked along with other major cities in the world.
Hyderabad Bicycling Club stations are going to be the first and last mile connectivity for Metro rail, It will help Hyderabad in reducing pollution. This is expected to reduce carbon dioxide levels by 2500 tonnes and emission levels by 35 percent and is expected to clock 20 million cycling trips per annum.
Earlier Hyderabad Bicycling Club (HBC), Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) and UN-Habitat have entered into a tripartite MoU to provide first and last mile connectivity to Metro passengers by setting up about 300 bike stations. According to the MoU, about 10,000 bicycles including e-bikes would be made available at 300 Bike Stations. Of these, 63 bike stations will be at Metro stations, while the rest will be the ‘feeder stations’ spread all over Hyderabad There will be two types of bikes – regular (pedal-driven) ones costing Rs 50,000 and e-bike costing Rs 1 lakh.
They want to accelerate the Project and implement it quickly in Hyderabad and replicate the same in other cities, to avoid the grave situation being faced by cities like Delhi.
