Lockdown has already made a lot of things difficult for us. But things are even more difficult for families who are not together in these tough times.
Recently, The US government has said that it is extending the 60-day ban on immigration and non-immigrant worker visas till the end of 2020.
So visas like the H-1B and H-2B, and certain categories of H-4, J, and L visas shall also remain suspended until the 31st of December, the Donald Trump government said during a press conference.
Why the ban?
The reason for the ban was to reduce unemployment in the US, which is reeling under the effects of the coronavirus-induced lockdown.
Trump has also said that the move was necessary to protect domestic workers who had been impacted due to a contraction in the economy in the wake of the pandemic.
Who will the be the most effected?
Indians, who account for 75% of H-1B petitions and over 90% for the H4 visa, will be the worst affected by the new order.
Out of the total 2.5 lakh H1B work visas, Indians had applied for 1.84 lakh visas for the current financial year, i.e. 67%.
As news of the order came in, a large number of women began posting anxious messages on social media groups of H1B and H4 visa holders, seeking legal counsel available to them.
Apart from the people whose jobs were in danger because of the executive order, hundreds of women who had applied for dependent visas or extensions of it were also suddenly facing an indefinite period of uncertainty.
US-based immigration attorney Prashant Dubey told in an interview that,
‘There is a personal, professional, and economic impact of not being able to obtain a visa stamp to come back to the US if they are currently stranded in India’.
Spouses who are stuck here in India are requesting to ‘Exempt the ban on H4 visa‘.
The request to exempt this ban is very much valid because the H4 visa is a ‘dependent’ visa that won’t affect the job/employment market of the USA.
To understand the depth of the issue, Here’s a video posted a by Telugu woman who is effected by this, and is stuck away from her husband since months now:

It’s very hard & heartbreaking when one has to stay apart from loved ones. Not asking or seeking anything related to work or job related concerns, just asking to let me reunite with my spouse. There are hundreds of wives like me waiting to be with their husbands & many kids waiting to be with their father. How are we a threat to job market🙄?? Kindly support us. @narendramodi @realdonaldtrump @dhsgov @ktrtrs #exempth4visa #familiesbelongtogether #reunitefamilies #india #usa
Hoping that the US government looks into this issue and help meet these families.
