Khairathabad Vinayaka is one of the biggest statues in the whole world. Every year during Vinakaya Chavithi, Lakhs of devotees visit the Khairathabad pandal during the 12 day event. This year the Ganesh Idol will be in style of “Sri Sakthi Peeta Siva Nagendra Mahaganapathi”. So here are a few things which you may not have known about this famous Ganesha installation.
The man who initiated this was Late Mr. S. Sankarayya, freedom fighter. In 1954 he founded the Sri Ganesh Utsav Committee, Khairatabad. Since then every year it has developed with the constant effort of Mr. S. Sankarayya’s family and friends and the committee members. The plan was that the height of the idol be increased every year by a foot.
The Ganesh idol of this place is the one of the tallest in the world, averaging sometimes to 60 feet. Mr. S Sankarayya’s brother Mr S. Sudharshan is continuing the tradition of Ganesh Pooja in Khairathabad successfully for the last 62 years. On the 11th day, this gigantic idol will be immersed in the Hussain Sagar lake as per the tradition.
This year, High Court and Telangana government requested the committee not to increase the height of the Ganesh idol like every year as it would be tough to move the idols for immersion.
Like the Ganesh idol, the Laddu here is also pretty famous for its massive weight. Every year, the laddu is prepared by Suruchi Foods, Tapeswaram, East Godavari district. Suruchi Foods’ owner Polisetty Mallibabu and his crew made this laddu. Just last year, the laddu weighed a massive 6000 Kgs. This year, the laddu will weigh about 500 Kgs.
